- Other medical conditions
Skin Resurfacing Treatments
Chemical peeling, microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing help to improve pore size, freckling, skin texture and the appearance of fine lines.
Facial Fillers and Injectables
Facial fillers include fat transfers, collagen, Restylane and Radiesse. These agents work to fill in folds, wrinkles and furrows in the lower face. The most important thing to remember about facial fillers is that the results are not permanent. BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable agent that helps to relax the muscles of the upper face to reduce muscle-causing wrinkles.
A fat transfer is the removal of fat cells from other areas of the body and transferred to fill facial lines, lips and depressed cheeks. Fat transfers do not require FDA approval for cosmetic use. Typically, results from fat fillers last one year.
Collagen is an ingredient that is derived from cows (bovine-based collagen) or from humans (human-based collagen). Zyderm® and Zyplast® are the brand names for bovine-based collagen. Cosmoderm® and Cosmoplast® are brand names for human-based collagen. These collagen products are approved by the FDA for cosmetic purposes. Results from theses products can last up to 6 months.
Restylane is a brand name for a form of hyaluronic acid, a common material found in all plants and animals. Restylane is FDA approved for cosmetic purposes. Results from Restylane are typically 6 months to a year.
Radiesse is the brand name for calcium hyroxylapatite, a synthetic form of material typically found in teeth and bone. Radiesse is used to fill the skin folds and wrinkles around the nose and cheeks. Results from Radiesse can last for one to two years.
BOTOX® Cosmetic
WHAT IS BOTOX COSMETIC?
Botox Cosmetic is a brand name for botulinum toxin type A that is FDA approved for cosmetic use. Botox Cosmetic is used to treat the frown lines between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet. Botox Cosmetic is a purified form of the protein toxin that is produced by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. Botox Cosmetic is the number one cosmetic procedure performed in the United States.
HOW DOES BOTOX COSMETIC WORK?
When Botox Cosmetic is injected into the muscle it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching the muscle, which causes the muscle to weaken. When the muscle weakens, the skin overlying the muscle relaxes and the wrinkle gradually softens and often disappears.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX COSMETIC LAST?
Usually, you will start to see the results of Botox Cosmetic within two to three days. The maximum benefit is seen in one week. Results can last from 3 to 6 months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox Cosmetic may last longer, up to 6 to 9 months. Your own results may vary – be sure to discuss with Dr. Rosenthal what you can expect.
HOW IS BOTOX COSMETIC PERFORMED?
An anesthetic cream is applied on the skin to numb the area where the Botox Cosmetic is to be injected. Using a very fine needle a small amount of the Botox Cosmetic is injected into the muscle that creates the wrinkle. The entire procedure only takes minutes and there is no downtime afterward.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO BOTOX COSMETIC?
Localized discomfort is minimal and brief. The most common side effects of Botox Cosmetic include headache, redness and discomfort at the injection sites.
HOW MUCH DOES BOTOX COSMETIC COST?
The price of Botox varies based upon the patient's individualized needs.
Restylane®
WHAT IS RESTYLANE?
Restylane is a dermal filler agent utilized to restore fullness and volume to the skin to help correct facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane is a clear liquid gel composed of a non-animal based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that exists in the human body and is present to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is biodegradable and is compatible with human hyaluronic acid.
HOW DOES RESTYLANE WORK?
Restylane acts to add volume and fullness to smooth wrinkles and it also attracts and will bind to water molecules to help maintain volume.
HOW LONG DOES RESTYLANE LAST?
Restylane is a safe facial filler and has been used worldwide for over a decade. Restylane is fully biocompatible and allergy testing is not required. Restylane is used to fill folds, smooth wrinkles and sculpt lips. Restylane has long-lasting results up to 6 months.
HOW IS THE RESTYLANE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?
Dr. Rosenthal requests that patients avoid taking high doses of aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, and Vitamin E for one week prior to injection of Restylane. If a patient has a history of facial “cold sores”, an anti-viral medicine will be prescribed before the injection. Restylane injection is performed in the office setting with the use of a topically applied local anesthetic numbing cream. As with any local injection, the most common side effect is localized redness and swelling.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO RESTYLANE?
Localized reactions include mild irritation, tenderness, bruising and swelling.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Restylane treatments are individualized for each patient so the price varies.
